Fast on the Track, Safe on the Road

Bill Collins drove the Interstate Truck Driving School racing Corvette at the SCCA June Sprints at Road America, Elkhart Lake, WI June 18th and 19th.

Bill and the Corvette were competing against some very well prepared competition with 15 cars in the class and did very well in the first race of the weekend.  Qualifying 5th, Bill jumped up to 4th at the start of the race, and then took advantage of a restart after a full course yellow flag and moved up to 3rd and held on for a podium finish. This was Bill's first time at the June Sprints, one of the nation's premier road racing events that has been held since 1956 at the Road America track.

On Sunday, Bill was gridded 6th on the outside of row 3.  The field bunched up at the start and he was trying to work his way up when an attempt to get inside of another car in turn 12 (Canada Corner) resulted in hitting a curb that caused a damaged right front wheel.  The resulting vibration and ill handling slowed Bill down but he managed to salvage points by finishing 7th.

All things considered, it was a very successful first event for the team at the June Sprints.  Just as is the case in driving commercial vehicles, pre-trip preparation and inspections played a big role in the reliability of the car on the track.  Tires, brakes, fluid levels and fuel systems are all very important both on and off the track.  The Interstate Truck Driving School team is accustomed to the proper preparation with their experience operating commercial vehicles and that translates to mechanical success on the track.

The next event for the Interstate Racing Team will be back at Road America the last weekend of July.  Stay tuned for more updates.
